Gammer Gurton’s Needle was published in 1575 but had a performance life sometime in the previous couple of decades – maybe as early as the 1550’s. A play titled Diccon the Bedlem is listed for publication around 1562/3, which maybe the same play, or an earlier version – certainly there is as much (if not more) reason to name this play after the character Diccon as Gammer Gurton as he is the prime mover of events.
